So, I have two options when it comes to laying out this forum:
1) a "flat" layout - where posts are laid out on the page chronologically. The benefit to this is it's easier to follow the discussion, but the drawback is you can only "reply" to the first post in a topic.
2) a "threaded" layout - where posts appear as replies to other posts - indented below replies... the benefit is that anyone can reply to any post (instead of just the first one), but the drawback is that it's a little harder to follow the discussion.
I need your feedback on what style you prefer... they both have benefits and drawbacks.
Have you looked at vBulletin, or another BB system? Ning misses the boat - at least in my limited experience - at keeping all users up-to-date when compared to vBulletin, etc.
And if cost is the issue... let me know. I could probably pick up the tab as a site sponsor - if the right deal was offered!
Actually, I've looked at a ton of other systems, and I find that Ning (although this is only my opinion) is the easiest to use (both on my end, and on the end of members) and has the most options for keeping up to date (there are RSS options all over the place).
Thanks for the sponsorship offer... it may be something we can look at down the road.
