Oh my.

I just snapped off the key to my u-lock inside the lock. I tried to force the rest of the key in to try and turn it but it's pretty much cooked. What exactly does one do in this situation?

Locksmith? Hacksaw?

I'm worried that my bike is going to get stripped before I figure out how to get it off.

ouch,

magnet?
small tweezers?
vacuum?

no idea.

but if the lock is on the bike and you're only trying to get the lock off, Sweet Pete's at Bloor and Dufferein does have have lock removal service that they provide as long as you can prove ownership of the bike.

As a Toronto Locksmith I get calls about this all the time. Usually we go to the bike and pick open the lock. Most U bike locks have some protection from picking so often we cannot save the lock. We need government photo ID before opening any lock.

As always, prevention is essential. Locks will give you a lot of notice before they stop working.

Never put WD40 in a key hole. Most oils will attract dirt and will gum up a lock.

If your lock is stiff, don't force it. Bring it into a locksmith shop. Many of us will give it a quick clean and a bit of graphite for free.

If the problem is bigger than just some dirt in the keyway then we will let you know before your bike is locked outdoors overnight with a broken key in the lock.

same thing just happened to me today. kryptonite, the key snapped off while attached to a signpost. i went to work and got some very fine forceps and no dice. the key is totally wedged in the lock because i need to turn it before i can 1) open the lock and 2) free the key. fortunatley the bike is stranded like 2 mintes walk from a bike shop that apparently has a lock cutting service. gotta go tomorrow.

its an expensive lock (around 125 dollars) and the cutting is an additional 50... anyone know if i can get reimbursed for ANY of this by kryptonite?
